Microtonal Perception Survey

UPDATE: I have received enough surveys. Thank you so much if you took part!
Unbiased Results Spreadsheet to be posted soon.

Hello,

I am running an experiment for my university course and need some volunteers.
I am trying to see how quickly people are able to notice microtonal changes to a signal.

If you are interested, here’s how you can help:

Listen to the sound file by clicking here.
For best results, please use headphones or a stereo set of desktop speakers. Laptop speakers will not give you a good enough representation of the sound.

Upon listening to the file, please send an email to this address (walkingshrub@gmail.com) with your answers filled out as such:

Subject: SURVEY

Sound 1: [Time code in seconds where you noticed a change (ie: 0:00)] [What you thought the change was]

Sound 2: [Time code in seconds where you noticed a change (ie: 0:00)] [What you thought the change was]

Sound 3: [Time code in seconds where you noticed a change (ie: 0:00)] [What you thought the change was]

Sound 4: [Time code in seconds where you noticed a change (ie: 0:00)] [What you thought the change was]

Sound 5: [Time code in seconds where you noticed a change (ie: 0:00)] [What you thought the change was]

________________________________________________________________________

There are 5 possible changes, and only one change will occur at a time:

-Amplitude/Volume Change
-Pitch Change
-High Pass Filter (removal of low frequencies or bass)
-Low Pass Filter (Removal of high frequencies or sibilance)
-Panning (Sound moves to the left or right speaker)

Please indicate when you noticed the change in seconds and which one you think the change was.
This is anonymous, so nobody will be judging you negatively on whether you are right or wrong.
I hope you can find the time to participate!

Thank you,
-Alex

  1. UPDATE: The Sounds are now hosted on Youtube. (This is in response to emails saying that the dropbox links were locked.)

Should be good now! Thanks so much for the submissions, everyone.
